should you skip sleep?

on those odd days where you have to pick between extra sleep and a workout, what's the move?

Fletcher Poole Banner

One of my favourite testimonials in one of my coaching groups went to Vegas recently.

He was very trying on my patience as he performed workouts at random times with huge cope.

  • “It’s 1AM so can I do today’s workout?”

  • “As I haven’t slept yet even though it’s Wednesday I’ve done Tuesdays workout”

  • Imagine tons of stuff like that over and over…

It did make me have to think hard about a certain type of question though.

When is it okay to skip sleep?

See I’ve always believed that in the short term when it comes to picking what to sacrifice, unless there’s some huge cognitive super super important make or break event happening the next day, you pick the workout.

When you’re talking about a few hours of sleep loss on one day, and a little bit less quality, it’s a no brainer in my eyes.

The difficulty is when you start having to answer that question on something more chronic.

Now look, I feel like 99% of people aren’t in a place where they actually have to weigh up the two of these options…

Even if you picked sleep over hitting a workout it’s still not complete game over, I’ve already written a lot about what to do if you miss a workout here.

But if you’re someone who finds themselves doing this all the time I think you’ve got some questions to ask yourself.

  1. Are you wasting tons of time somewhere in your life that you can move around to get this gym time without losing sleep?

  2. If it takes a while to get to the gym are you able to do some work/chores during your commute or switch to something closer?

  3. Are you able to cut down to literally 2 fullbody workouts a week because of your time issues?

  4. What’s stopping you from doing a workout at home?

If somehow all of those are met with an impossibility, including more extreme options like skipping a lunch break to work out, etc.

1) I’m shocked you have time to read this.

2) Just go to bed 30 minutes later and get in a quick fb workout twice a week. I give you full permission.

No idea who this newsletter is for, but for most regular people who aren’t in this apocalyptic no time scenario, just take the sleep loss, don’t stress it.
