How Effective is Your Failure?

Are you really training to failure?

That’s probably a useless question. What I’m really asking you is if your failure is actually effective.

There’s only one reason you reach failure.

You have reached the maximum amount of effort you can tolerate.

Your CNS is unable to work harder to complete a rep. Throw in some electrically stimulated contractions and well… Your muscles still have a lot left in them.

So what is it that stops you from those extra reps? no it isn’t that 100% of your true power would explode your limbs 🙄

  • Stability of an exercise

  • Amount of fatigue you have

  • Difficulty of an exercise

  • Your pain threshold

Have you ever seen a guy who takes cable flys to a few reps shy of failure, only give up on the grind?

That might have been his failure. im fr.

Let’s say he’s standing, the exercise is super unstable. Let’s say he’d been overtraining a ton. After all that, this exercise is still a challenging compound movement.

That could have been real failure.

If you haven’t had an eureka moment yet I’m ashamed 😔

Make that same movement more stable, remove his fatigue, have him do one side at a time, he’s getting a ton more reps. You might even see more weight moved.

So if you want failure to be effective you have to have:

  • The right volume

  • The right exercise

That being said, I’m going to finish this off by dropping a bombshell.

Training to failure isn’t the best way to train 🤯

However.

To get to the best thing you can do, you have to train to failure. Quite the paradox.

You need an acclimation phase, I’ll write to you on Friday and I’ll explain what I mean.
