What Your FFMI Means
little bit of a joke (and a nerd moment)

I saw this random Tweet on edtwt (eating disorder twitter).
It was a little meme talking about BMI ranges and giving them names.
You can imagine how weird it was. But everyone seemed to agree. It made me think.
What if I made one about FFMI and muscle?
So here’s my own version.
I’ve picked FFMI instead of BMI as it takes bodyfat % into account.
FFMI is always smaller than BMI, and what we care about.
ffmi range | muscle type | time to level up |
---|---|---|
<12 | severely depleted DANGER | a matter of weeks |
12-14 | under muscled | weeks to a month |
14-16 | baseline untrained | 2-3 months |
16-18 | novice | 4-6 months |
18-20 | beginner | 6-8 months |
20-22 | intermediate | 8-12 months |
22-25 | advanced | 18-24+ months |
25+ | peak natural limit | Total time ~4 years |
So this is what each FFMI means.
It doesn’t tell you if someone is lean or fat, but it does start to explain ranges.
If you go and find your FFMI you should be able to get a good idea of how long it’ll take to “level up”.
Speaking of time to level up and equations…

i made one 😳
FFMI = 15 + 10(1-e(-0.7 years))
Point being this is not 100% accurate, but it’s close to it.
That equation will show how long it’ll take to get to the next area, and how long yours should have taken.
Use this to better set goals for the future, or feel bad about how much progress you’ve made in your time…
Either way the gains will be pretty steady now that you’re here!
Your Hypertrophy Hero,
Fletcher
