Most "dangerous" sleep drug is actually great

Melatonin isn't the demon people think it is

Fletcher Poole Banner

Almost everyone thinks melatonin is bad for your health.

  • It messes with your hormones

  • It’s not real sleep it’s like being knocked out

  • It’s super addictive and you build a tolerance

Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

Melatonin has had one of the greatest positive impacts on my life.

I used to have bad insomnia. I’d be up all night. Thinking, anticipating the next day, brainstorming about my current interest.

See I’m probably quite similar to you.

I love learning.

I’ll be up working and learning, reading and writing. I always switch off at my bedtime, but I’m wired. The lights, computer, high stimulation work, has kept me awake.

These nights are all too common for people who actually have a life, they switch off melatonin production.

The fix is supplementing melatonin. All it takes is 3mg.

Melatonin has no feedback loop, this means you can’t build a tolerance. Some people get psychologically dependent, but that makes sense. If it helps you sleep, why get rid of it?

I will admit there is one side effect someone can get from melatonin.

Melatonin overdose.

Look this isn’t scary, I swear 😭

A lethal dose of melatonin is something you couldn’t reach if you took an entire bottle of the stuff.

However, a melatonin overdose is when you still have melatonin in your system when you wake up the next day.

It makes you feel a bit groggy and tired.

There are two ways to fix this.

  1. Take melatonin 3 hours before bed, this is the fix 9/10 times.

  2. Take a lower dose.

Try option 1 before option 2.

If you have trouble with your sleep I hope this is something that helps you too.

P.S. You might not think sleep matter too much but this is what destroys a lot of people’s growth. Someone who only gets 5 hours of sleep also gets 60% less gains than someone with 8 hours.
