Gerrymandering Your Diet

Politics can teach you a little bit about dieting

In many countries the way politicians are elected is not by getting the most votes.

It’s a super long winded assignment of value to different locations.

The idea here is to more accurately capture each demographic and keep things fair.

It’s not perfect, but it’s what they have.

Some states’ votes are more powerful than others. This changes the game massively. You could theoretically win the US election with 21% of the population voting for you and 79% voting for the other guy.

This doesn’t just happen with countries, it happens with states, cities, etc.

One technique that politicians can use is something called Gerrymandering.

This involves managing districts of a state so that you’re pushing your opponents voters into an area your opponent will likely win, whilst pulling your voters out of that district into one where it’s tight.

By changing these borders and moving around these people you end up in a place where you can win overall with significantly less people.

Looking at this you might think that’s idiotic.

How can you win when the opposition has 66% of the votes?

Yet you might be a little hypocritical here.

I’m sure you’ve been in a weight loss phase.

You’ve definitely had a few days in there where you go other your calories a bit. “Oh it’s only one day.” You might view 6/7 adherence as meaning you’re only losing one days worth of progress.

Without realising it you’re gerrymandering your diet.

You’d realised earlier that looking at the winner of each part of a whole is… idiotic 😬

What matters is the whole.

What were those average calories across the week?

Here’s a fake week with a maintenance of 2000

Monday - 1720
Tuesday - 1920
Wednesday - 1780
Thursday - 3640
Friday - 1670
Saturday - 1720
Sunday - 1580

So even though 6/7 days end up being in that deficit, the average cals are 2008.

That’s actually a tiny tiny surplus.

Imagine there were two days with a surplus.

If you added only 700 calories to a day, or across a few days, it’d be a 100 cal daily surplus.

See what I mean?

Gerrymandering your diet.

Make sure you’re keeping an eye on those averages.

Especially make sure you’re logging those days where you’re going higher on the cals.

Often times it’s the days filled with food you end up not tracking.

This keeps it even further in the idea of “oh it’s just 1 day out of 7” and literally prevents you knowing the numerical cost.

Diet smartly, it’ll save you weeks and months.
