Let's Get GAS

time to learn

Fletcher Poole Banner

A while back I went on a bit of a rant…

It was pretty random.

Let me share it with you. It’s weird. It’s cool. You’ll learn.

You’re not a mechanical machine, there’s many variables involved in perceiving temperature.

It’s strange that you typically rely on one metric for temperature (the temperature).

This only makes sense if you stay in one place forever. It’s not a universal number.

Perception has a lot more at play.

Some are external, some internal.

External

  • Humidity if drier will be a much easier cold. If humid it’ll cling to the skin, pass through clothes. It’ll suck.

  • Clear skies will lead to you getting more sunlight. If they’re cloudy… yikes.

  • Wind will immediately make you feel much much colder.

  • Snowy colds will have all the white reflect the sun, making you, and surfaces warmer.

Some countries are stacked to have NONE of these…

Now I’ll tell you about internal factors.

This is anything psychological.

It’s what this email is about. It’s GAS. General Adaptation Syndrome.

Internal

See your body has physiological response to anything it thinks is a psychological stressor.

Chilling on a nice warm beach with a diet sprite feels like heaven.

The same heat. On a long day. At work. In the office.

Well that feels deathly.

Isn’t is strange how the same conditions can feel different just based on your perspective?

  • Snowy days make a super bright world where you feel warm and cheery. The cold you can tolerate is higher.

  • Sunny skies are going to make you feel nicer, and happier, and you’ll be able to tolerate lower temperatures.

  • Experience to a type of temperature/city/country is proof that you’ve survived before. When this happens you’re able to tank it the second time.

Here’s the thing.

This goes for most “stressors”.

When you don’t think you can handle it. Your body starts messing you up.

Same with anxiety. Same with being overworked.

Start to disconnect the physical from the psychological and you’ll last longer.
